Bananas and Monkeys

This is an anecdote that I found around the web. It's really enlightening. The source is unknown.

Start with a cage containing five monkeys.

Inside the cage, hang a banana on a string and place a set of stairs under it. Before long, a monkey will go to the stairs and start to climb towards the banana. As soon as he touches the stairs, spray all of the other monkeys with cold water.

After a while, another monkey makes an attempt with the same result - all the other monkeys are sprayed with cold water. Pretty soon, when another monkey tries to climb the stairs, the other monkeys will try to prevent it.

Now, put away the cold water. Remove one monkey from the cage and replace it with a new one. The new monkey sees the banana and wants to climb the stairs. To his surprise and horror, all of the other monkeys attack him.

After another attempt and attack, he knows that if he tries to climb the stairs, he will be assaulted.

Next, remove another of the original five monkeys and replace it with a new one. The newcomer goes to the stairs and is attacked. The previous newcomer takes part in the punishment with enthusiasm! Likewise, replace a third original monkey with a new one, then a fourth, then the fifth. Every time the newest monkey takes to the stairs, he is attacked.

Most of the monkeys that are beating him have no idea why they were not permitted to climb the stairs or why they are participating in the beating of the newest monkey.

After replacing all the original monkeys, none of the remaining monkeys have ever been sprayed with cold water. Nevertheless, no monkey ever again approaches the stairs to try for the banana. Why not? Because as far as they know that's the way it's always been done round here.

And that, my friends, is how company policies are made.

Most of the times it happens in all of the companies and if a monkey tries to ask why this is done, it is considered rude and i tell you from experience he gets more beating. :)

I first read this anecdote 30 years ago. It was specious and unlikely even then. To see it recycled here does nothing for the originality or credibility of this site.

I find your lack of a sense of humour both saddening and distasteful. Also, your lack of originality in your pseudonym indicates a lack of imagination which discredits your inappropriate criticism.

That, my friends, is just about all of human history summed up, not just company policies! Brilliant!

That's not an anecdote it was an actual experiment, and the reported results are the true results. Obviously the experiment was not designed to reflect the creation of company policies, but the rest is completely true.

Matt, you are right. I checked out and in fact it seems to be a real experiment. Thank you. About the company policies... well, I think you can fit the conclusion of this experiment to a lot of contexts. In every case it is so hilarious! James Smith, I agree with you that this is not an original post but it not meant to be original. About credibility... well, I left people judge. Hi everyone!

I was thinking the same when I went out to get my iPad and my new iPhone4. I have absolutely no idea why I need to buy them, but I do it anyways. Company policies, marketink policies... same fight here hehehe

Not just company policies - how about religion.

The question is, are the other monkeys wrong for what they are doing? Does every generation need to be hosed down for taboos to hold sway?
